3 Keys to Staying Focused in Chaos
In March of 2020, we were thrust into the midst of chaos that had begun around the world in full. For many of us, there was hope that 2021 would be different, but the chaos continues. If we are going to survive and thrive amid so many distractions and real struggles, we must remain focused.
Disengaged employees were costing American business billions of dollars before the pandemic. With all the chaos that disengagement has grown. I heard one leader talking earlier today about the fog of trauma brain. Between the pandemic, race riots, political unrest, attacks on democracy itself, and regular life, our souls have lost the margin to keep up.
So how do you re-center and survive, even thrive?
1. Keep First Things First
Before you allow the fog to deplete another day, set your priorities. Even if you can only set today’s priorities, do so. Ask this question, “What three tasks will move the ball the furthest today?” Then do them.
Also, maintain humanity. If you forget the people around you are human, and so are you, you will forget to treat others well. Don’t let “get things done” outweigh your generosity and gratitude for the people sharing these days with you.
2. Go to Work
Many people will find great freedom and productivity by using your days just like you were in the office. Keep your schedule and work area consistent.
As a content creator and coach to others, this means sitting in the same spot to create each day. For a friend of mine it means getting cleaned up and dressed up, even when working alone at home.
3. Have Some Fun
Today my family is not in quarantine, but we are all home due to a snow day. I will probably knock off early to hang with my kids. But not until my three priorities are complete. I will give my time to those things which must be done, and allow myself to get the work finished, then I will take time to reward myself with some fun.
The world has changed. But it hasn’t ended. Don’t let the chaos win.
