How I got featured on one of my favorite podcasts (without an interview)!
One of my favorite podcast leaders, Dan Miller, does not do interviews. Dan spends 48 minutes each week sharing insights and thoughts on leadership, living with passion and purpose, and making a profit on the 48 Days to the Work You Love Podcast.
So, how did I get featured on his podcast?
Here is my 3-step plan that you can use to get on your favorite podcasts as well.
1. Listen
As a podcaster the greatest measurement of making a difference you can see is “Number of Downloads.” Most podcasters do it to build a tribe and make an impact, not to be rich and famous. So, Listen.
Also, one of the greatest turn offs for a podcast host is someone who does not even know the format of their show, and so asks to be on their show when they are just not a fit. So, listen to the show and get a feel for what matters to the host and how you can join them in their cause.
2. Participate
Podcasters are far more likely to feature those who are actively engaged in their tribe, because they know you share their views and values, or at the very least you understand their views and values.
When you know where a host and his tribe are coming from, and where they are going, you are for more capable of interacting in a way that is helpful. As you interact with the host, you will find yourself moving deeper and deeper into their circles, even if you do not get close to the host, you will know how to address them well.
3. Send the email.
This week, I heard a business leader say, “If you don’t make the call someone else will.” How true this is? In my case, it was sending the email. In fact, it was sending several. As I said earlier, Dan does not do interviews. Instead, he answers listener questions week in and week out that they send in via email.
This past week was the third time I engaged the discussion and sent an email giving my input. I strove to honor Dan, recognize his wisdom, and offer a perspective that I knew would encourage and teach his audience.
By sending the email, I took a chance that maybe this one would make a difference. If not me someone else may have sent it, or worse no one would have sent it, and the audience would not have been served.
The Real Secret to Being Featured
Dan read my email. In full. Including my name.
Then he proceeded to comment not only on the truths I had shared, but specifically how they related to his audience. 25% of the show featured me, because I was not trying to be featured, I was trying to serve.
When we choose to serve others first, we will find out that our star shines brighter. The biggest secret to getting featured is to shift your mindset to serving others first. Then let the promotion come when it comes.
The power of relationship far outweighs any marketing secrets, so choose relationship today.
